Did you know that the University of Minnesota has a Minnesota Transportation Finance Database that you can use to analyze trends in funding, safety, vehicles, and more in the state of Minnesota?
The project behind this database, known as the Transportation Policy and Economic Competitiveness Program (TPEC), is a cooperative effort between the Institute for Urban and Regional Infrastructure Finance and the Center for Transportation Studies. The TPEC website offers downloadable spreadsheets tracking financing and other information for various types of roadways in the state.
There is also a database visualization tool which provides at-a-glance graphs, charts, and animations of the trends over time.
During the past year, TPEC updated the database to include state funding and bond funds; local funding including local governmental fund data from cities, counties, and townships; transit operating and capital funds for urban and rural transit systems; and airport expenditures. Examples of these new and updated datasets include:
- Pavement type by county — Includes information on the centerline mileage and lane mileage by pavement type. This includes bituminous, concrete, dirt/unimproved, gravel, and other.
- The pavement condition Minnesota’s County State Aid Highway System — Includes information on the length of roads in good, fair, and poor condition for all roads in Minnesota’s County State-Aid Highway System.
- The pavement condition Minnesota’s National Highway System — Includes information on the length of roads in good, fair, and poor condition for all roads in Minnesota’s National Highway System (including interstates, US highways, Minnesota highways, and all of them combined).
- Bridge Condition — Includes information on the bridge count and area in good, fair, poor condition, and structurally deficient.
