The Local Road Research Board published the Stormwater Best Management Practice (BMP) Maintenance Resource Guide in 2009, and best practices for stormwater management have since evolved. Much has been learned about the benefits and limitations and inspection and maintenance activities of stormwater ponds, bioretention facilities, underground treatment devices, underground detention, and infiltration. Regulatory requirements have also changed as indicated in the Minnesota Stormwater Manual.
“As transportation professionals, we recognize the importance of properly designing our facilities to address stormwater runoff and prevent negative environmental impacts. This research will provide new and enhanced best practices for stormwater management,” said Brian Giese, county engineer, Pope County.
Objectives
This project will update, revise, and expand the Stormwater BMP Maintenance Resource Guide to reflect current available practices, knowledge, and regulations. It will optimize the guidance and recommendations available to practitioners, which will result in better decision-making regarding how to best meet regulations and stormwater management goals in a cost-effective manner. It also will provide recommendations for current and future stormwater BMPs for maintenance resources for other issues and increase the lifespan of stormwater BMPs.
