When urban highway projects were built several decades ago, many thriving communities were physically divided and negatively impacted, experiencing social, economic and environmental hardships from highway development. A national review of innovative projects in the transportation right of way (ROW) has identified strategies for repairing and revitalizing these communities and illustrates the potential for significant benefits within communities and the transportation network.

Short Films, Big Visions: Transportation-themed films spark conversation about community connections

Dozens of community members and transportation advocates tuned in to “Short Films, Big Visions: A Series on Transportation and Community” on February 23. Co-hosted by CTS and the Humphrey School of Public Affairs, the virtual event featured a screening of short films produced by the Redford Center for its “Community Power” series followed by an engaging panel discussion.

New Project: Maximizing Transportation Assets by Building Community Connection Through Innovative Development of Rights of Way and Airspace
Transportation agencies throughout the United States are focused on repairing the damage that highway construction has caused in communities.
MnDOT seeks partnerships with communities, businesses, and government entities to better utilize state highway lands and airspace.
These partnerships aim to enhance economic wellbeing and quality of life. Projects like highway caps and development of spaces underneath highways can increase equity, reduce disparities, and limit environmental impacts.
