New Project: Evaluation of Proprietary Rejuvenators

A wide range of proprietary spray-on asphalt rejuvenators are available on the market. A National Road Research Alliance field study has been initiated to monitor the performance of some vendors’ materials on test sections over the next five to 10 years. Local agencies are interested in learning more about the many products on the market.

“The decline of transportation funding and the increase in construction costs over the years have caused local agencies to look for ways to stretch their budgets and the life expectancy of their pavements,” said JinYeene Neumann, county engineer, Carlton County. “This project asks for assistance understanding the various proprietary rejuvenators that are being marketed.”

Objectives

The objective of this new research project is to evaluate eleven (11) different spray-on asphalt rejuvenation products that are being (or potentially will be) marketed in Minnesota. Some of these products were used in many roads throughout the US and some of them are relatively new technologies. Researchers will develop a synthesis of product information that will include each product’s:

  1. Applications.
  2. Advantages and disadvantages.
  3. Cost (initial and life cycle).
  4. Performance.
  5. Construction issues.
  6. Wait (cure) time after application and before opening to traffic.
  7. Impacts on pavement markings and striping.

In addition to developing guidance for using these products, researchers plan to create an informational video showing the application of these products in the field.
