Supporting older drivers to safely age in place as they experience age-related declines is important as many Minnesota drivers are reaching retirement age. Minnesotans, 65 years and older, are expected to represent 20% of the state population by 2025, with an overall increase of 122% from 2010-2040. While older drivers are generally safe drivers, those aged 75-85 face the highest risks from injury.
Though awareness of cognitive ability may play an important role in understanding driving ability, many older drivers cannot accurately monitor and appraise their own declines in driving performance. As such, it is important to consider accessible, preventative methods that may improve older driver awareness and attention for driving.
“This research will explore whether phone-based applications can help drivers maintain their mental and physical acuity and how that impacts driving. One part will explore if techniques rooted in mindfulness meditation can improve or maintain wellbeing, while the other portion will examine whether providing driver coaching can assist in safer driving. Combined, it could provide a path forward to improve mental, physical, and driver safety in the long term for our aging population,” said Derek Leuer, MnDOT administrative engineer.
Objectives
Based on previous research findings, this study will evaluate two treatments to understand their efficacy in improving older driver awareness and attention for driving. In a randomized clinical trial with older adults, researchers will utilize the RoadCoach app to provide active coaching on behaviors such as speeding, hard braking, excessive turning, and stop sign running. The second treatment will employ Headspace, a meditation app aimed at improving mindfulness and reducing stress. Researchers also will test the combination of the two treatments.
